Monitor Light Bars: Are They Worth It for Your Desk Setup?

Hey guys, Abe here!

If you spend a lot of time at your computer, whether you're working, gaming, studying, or building out your homelab, having good lighting can make a bigger difference than you might expect.

Most of us focus on the big things when setting up a desk. We spend money on monitors, keyboards, mice, and other hardware, but lighting is something that often gets overlooked. A regular desk lamp works fine, but it can take up valuable space and doesn't always do the best job of lighting the area directly in front of your monitor.

That's where monitor light bars come in.

In this video, we're taking a look at a monitor light bar and discussing whether one is worth adding to your desk setup.

What Is a Monitor Light Bar?

A monitor light bar is a small light that sits on top of your monitor and shines down onto your desk. Instead of placing a lamp beside your computer, the light is mounted directly to the display, helping illuminate your keyboard, desk, and workspace without taking up additional desk space.

Depending on the model, you may also get adjustable brightness and color temperature, letting you choose between warmer lighting for a more relaxed environment and cooler lighting for focused work.

It's a relatively simple accessory, but it can be a nice addition to a workstation, especially if you spend hours at your desk every day.

Advantages of Using a Monitor Light Bar

1. It Frees Up Desk Space

One of the biggest advantages is that the light sits on top of your monitor rather than on your desk.

If your desk is already packed with multiple monitors, a keyboard, a mouse, speakers, or other equipment, every bit of extra space helps. This is especially useful for smaller desks where adding another lamp just creates more clutter.

For a homelab or workstation setup, keeping the desk organized makes it easier to work without constantly moving things around.

2. It Puts Light Where You Need It

A traditional desk lamp often spreads light across a larger area, and depending on where you place it, it can create unwanted reflections or shine directly toward your eyes.

A properly designed monitor light bar directs light downward onto your work surface. That means you can illuminate your keyboard, notes, and other items on your desk without needing a large lamp beside your monitor.

Many monitor light bars use directional optics designed to minimize light shining directly onto the screen. The result can be a more comfortable workspace, although the actual performance depends on the design and positioning of the light.

3. It Can Make Long Work Sessions More Comfortable

If you're spending hours troubleshooting a network, configuring servers, writing documentation, or working through a technical course, comfortable lighting matters.

A dark room with a bright monitor can feel harsh, while a well-lit workspace can make it easier to see the things around your screen. Adjustable brightness also gives you more control over the lighting in your environment.

Just keep in mind that a light bar isn't a guaranteed solution for eye strain. Screen brightness, room lighting, monitor position, and taking regular breaks all matter too.

4. It Gives You More Control Over Your Lighting

Depending on the model, you may be able to adjust both brightness and color temperature.

This is useful because the lighting you want during the day might not be what you prefer late at night. Warmer lighting can create a more relaxed atmosphere, while cooler lighting may feel more suitable for focused daytime work.

Being able to adjust the light without rearranging your desk is a nice convenience.

5. It Keeps Your Setup Looking Clean

Let's be honest: a clean desk setup is part of the appeal of building a workstation.

A monitor light bar has a compact design and doesn't require a separate lamp base. It can fit naturally into a multi-monitor workspace and keep the area around your keyboard and mouse looking less cluttered.

It isn't going to improve your network performance or make your servers run any faster, but it can make the place where you do all that work a little nicer to use.

Disadvantages of Monitor Light Bars

Of course, monitor light bars aren't perfect, and they're not necessarily the right choice for everyone.

1. They Can Be More Expensive Than a Basic Desk Lamp

You can pick up a basic desk lamp for relatively little money. Some monitor light bars cost considerably more, especially models with additional controls, wireless remotes, or other features.

If all you need is a little extra light on your desk, a regular lamp may be the better value.

2. Compatibility Can Be an Issue

Not every light bar fits every monitor.

The shape and thickness of your monitor's top edge, the curvature of the display, and the space around your webcam can all affect compatibility. Some mounting designs work better on flat monitors, while others are designed for curved or ultrawide displays.

Before buying one, check the mounting requirements and make sure it will work with your monitor.

3. It Won't Replace All Your Room Lighting

A monitor light bar is primarily designed to illuminate your immediate work area. It generally isn't intended to light an entire room.

If you're working in a dark room, you may still want an overhead light, a floor lamp, or some other form of ambient lighting. A light bar works best as part of a sensible lighting setup rather than as your only light source.

4. It Adds Another Cable and Accessory

Most monitor light bars need power, often through USB. That means another cable to manage and another accessory attached to your monitor.

Depending on your desk setup, the cable may be easy to hide, or it may create a little more clutter than you'd like.

You'll also want to make sure the light bar doesn't interfere with your webcam or other accessories mounted on top of the display.

Monitor Light Bar vs. Traditional Desk Lamp

So, which one makes more sense?

A monitor light bar is a good option if you want targeted desk lighting, prefer a clean setup, and don't want a lamp taking up space beside your monitor.

A traditional desk lamp makes more sense if you need to illuminate a larger area, regularly move your lighting around, or want something that can be used away from your computer.

Neither option is automatically better. It comes down to your workspace, your monitor, and how you use your desk.

Is This Monitor Light Bar Worth Considering?

If you're looking to improve your desk setup without adding more clutter, a monitor light bar is worth considering. It offers a practical way to illuminate your work surface while keeping your desk free for the equipment you actually use.

The main things I'd look at before buying one are the mounting design, brightness controls, color temperature options, and whether it fits your particular monitor. Those details matter more than simply having another accessory on your desk.

As always, think about what actually makes sense for your setup rather than buying something just because it looks good in a product photo.

Final Thoughts

A monitor light bar is a relatively small upgrade, but it can make your workspace more organized and give you better control over how your desk is illuminated.

For people who spend a lot of time at their computers, those little improvements can add up. Whether you're working through IT labs, studying for certifications, gaming, or just getting through your daily workload, having a comfortable place to work is worth thinking about.
